REMEMBERING GARY DEWBERRY

January 24, 2018

Most everyone has one—a special place. That place where you had your debutante ball, your wedding reception, celebrated your confirmation or bar mitzvah, your child’s first birthday. Or maybe it’s where your grandfather took you by the hand to get an ice cream cone after school…

When we set out on this journey to create The Dewberry, we did so with these memories in mind. It is our genuine hope that The Dewberry becomes your host for festive celebrations, important meetings or simply a relaxing holiday. But ultimately it is our desire, whatever the occasion, to become a part of your fondest memories.

Some of my fondest memories are of my father. He was a loyal man of faith with a big heart and tough skin. Dad’s love ran deep and came in various forms. Gentle at times and tough love at others depending on the circumstance, but Dad always exhibited the appropriate response.

Daddy always used to say, “If you’re going to do something, give it everything you got. Make it right. It might take a little more time, a little more blood, sweat and tears…but make it last. Because remember: you’re a Dewberry, and that’s the way we do it.”

I told my dad as he was dying that I was going to name my hotel after him. Because at the end of the day, I could never thank him enough for the most important thing he gave me: a good name.

The Dewberry is a manifestation of all I’ve been taught. When you talk about my hotel and you talk about my dad, you talk about someone who decided to do it right.

Always.

I look forward to seeing you soon,
